The Structural Challenge Epics DAO Addresses
Epics DAO confronts the reality that while open-source software is indispensable as a foundation for society and technology, its maintenance and continuity remain structurally unstable.
This instability is not caused by a lack of value or significance. Despite the fact that substantial development, maintenance, and operations are actively carried out, the contributions behind them are difficult to make visible, and involvement and recognition tend to be intermittent.
Without sustained involvement, technical debt and maintenance burdens accumulate, ultimately undermining the sustainability of the very foundation itself. Epics DAO approaches this not as a matter of individual reward design or incentives, but as a structural problem that requires structural solutions.
Buidlers Guild's Structural Approach
Buidlers Guild is designed as one implementation to address these structural challenges.
In a competitive card game, building a strong deck requires a balanced combination of different card types — Monsters, Magic, and Equipment/Tools. A deck loaded with only one type simply does not function.
The three jobs in Buidlers Guild — Dev, Degen, and Investor — are intentionally designed to correspond to this card structure. Dev packs primarily yield Magic cards, Degen packs primarily yield Equipment/Tool cards, and Investor packs primarily yield Monster cards. This means that even if only one job is actively functioning, a strong deck cannot be built.
In card games, synergy emerges only when different card types come together, creating a composition that is strong as a whole. Through this mechanism, the pursuit of in-game strength naturally encourages balanced involvement across all three jobs.
Through this structure, Epics DAO aims to create an environment where contributions to open source are not concentrated in any single role, but where development, investment, and community activity all grow in a balanced manner.
